Mock Brains

    1 hour 55 minutes

This dish is certainly more appetizing than it may sound. Rolled oats and onion, boiled then crumbed and fried. This depression era recipe has been in my family since the 30's.

    7 people made this

    Serves: 2

    • 1 cup rolled oats
    • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
    • 1 onion, diced
    • salt and pepper, to taste
    • 2 eggs, beaten
    • 1 cup bread crumbs
    • oil, for frying

    Preparation:20min  ›  Cook:35min  ›  Extra time:1hour cooling  ›  Ready in:1hour55min

    1. Cook rolled oats in the boiling water with onion. When very well cooked and thick, season well then press into a greased basin or mould.
    2. When cold, turn out onto a cutting board then slice into 1cm slices. Dip in the egg then the bread crumbs.
    3. Heat frying pan over medium high heat with oil. Fry until golden brown on both sides then drain on paper towel lined plate.

I have been looking for a long time for a recipe using Oats, and it's on the cards, and I will make this as soon as my new kitchen is up and running, and I'll even upload a pic!! I will not be using any meat by products at all, I will be making these Vegan, which will be yummy... Update!! I've just added Spinach and Garlic to this recipe, and it's gorgeous. You don't need BACON just leave the recipe as it is and use herbs and spices instead. Many thanks to the Author for this wonderful recipe, it is now a favourite in my house though I tweaked the recipe using herbs!! "Love, love, love it!!" Thank you...  -  02 Dec 2016

This was nice. I have been looking for a method of preparing oatmeal as a savory dish rather than sweet and haven't had much luck.. until now. I liked this.. will try adding bacon or sausage to this next time  -  06 May 2013
