Wheaten Loaf

    This basic wheaten loaf uses salt, bicarb and cream of tartar for rising. It's sweetened with a bit of brown sugar and uses milk to keep it moist. No yeast necessary.

    Makes: 1 loaf

    • 2 cups (250g) wholemeal flour
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon bicarb soda
    • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
    • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
    • 1 dessert spoon butter
    • milk, to bind

    Preparation:15min  ›  Cook:45min  ›  Ready in:1hour 

    1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
    2. Combine flour, salt, bicarb soda, cream of tartar and brown sugar. Rub in butter. Stir in enough milk, to bind.
    3. Bake in a loaf tin for 45 minutes to an hour.
