This no nonsense bran loaf uses just the basics: flour, bran, bicarb, cream of tartar, a bit of golden syrup to sweeten and some milk to bind. Enjoy.

The Walters

Makes: 1 loaf

  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1/2 cup bran
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarb soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 2 teaspoons golden syrup or treacle
  • milk, to bind

Preparation:15min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Extra time:30min cooling  ›  Ready in:1hour15min 

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
  2. Combine flour, bran, bicarb soda and cream of tartar. Stir in treacle then just enough milk to bind.
  3. Pour into the loaf tin and bake until a knife inserted in the centre comes out clean, about 30 minutes.
