    This split pea soup is simple. Split peas, water, onion, tomato puree and salt to taste. By soaking the peas overnight you reduce the cooking time but it's not necessary.

    Serves: 8 

    • 3 bowls split peas, washed, soaked and drained
    • 6 litres water
    • 3 onions, diced
    • salt, to taste
    • 2kg tomato puree

    1. Boil the spit peas in the water with the onions and salt, until cooked through, about 1 hour.
    2. When cooked, push through a sieve (or blend with a stick blender). Reheat and add the tomato puree. Cook until warmed through.
    3. Serve with crusty bread.


    If you soak your split peas overnight, it reduces the cooking time. You do not have to do this, just simmer for longer and add more water if necessary.
