Remove the crusts from the end of the loaf. Cut the crusts of the rest of the loaf about 4 pieces at a time. With a rolling pin, roll the slices of bread flat, one at a time. Butter the bread then roll up 1 piece of asparagus in each slice.
These are even better when you add 1 slice of Jarlsberg cheese the same size as the spear. Spread the centre of the bread with French mustard and place the spear and cheese on top, then roll. Brush each roll with melted butter and bake at 170°C until lightly browned.
