This traditional fry bread recipe was given to my by an old mate from school. It has sugar, water, yeast, flour and salt. It's cut into triangles then fried in butter or oil.

Serves: 4

  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons yeast
  • 3-4 cups flour
  • dash of salt
  • 500g butter or 500ml oil

Preparation:10min  ›  Cook:15min  ›  Extra time:1hour rising  ›  Ready in:1hour25min

  1. Dissolve sugar in the water then stir in the yeast. Let it activate. Grease a bowl with a bit of butter.
  2. In a large bowl add the flour and stir in the salt. Make a well in the centre and pour in the activated frothy yeast mixture. Kneed until soft and elastic.
  3. Turn the dough into the buttered bowl then set in a warm place to rise. About an hour.
  4. Cut into triangles then fry in butter or oil. Goes great with pork and puha or on its own with golden syrup.
