This is Bengali comfort food, very soothing and satisfying with potato fritters and rice. Easy to make, too.


Serves: 5 

  • 1 cup red lentils
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 3 medium tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2-3 fresh green chillies, slit
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • salt as needed

  1. Wash the lentils well. Simmer with the water and tomatoes until fully soft. If you like, blend with a stick blender to a smooth consistency.
  2. Heat oil in a saucepan. Add the mustard seeds, chillies and turmeric. When the mustard seeds splutter, add the lentil mixture. Heat to a simmer, add salt to taste, and serve!
