Orzo, or risoni, is basically rice-shaped pasta. It's a great alternative if you are bored of rice and this recipe is a good way to use leftovers.


Serves: 4 

  • 1 cup uncooked orzo (risoni)
  • 2 sausages, sliced
  • 2 slices ham, cut into 1cm squares
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 small onion, chopped
  • 3/4 cups red kidney beans
  • 1/2 cup green peas
  • 1 green capsicum, cubed
  • 1 jalapeño pepper, sliced
  • 1 cup tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • cumin seed to taste

  1. Cook orzo according to package directions. Drain well and set aside.
  2. In a saucepan, fry the sausages and ham in olive oil over medium heat until slightly brown.
  3. Add the garlic, onion, red kidney beans, green peas, green capsicum and jalapeño pepper. Sauté for 3 minutes.
  4. Add tomato paste and taco seasoning. Mix well.
  5. Add the cooked orzo and mix until evenly colored. Pour the lemon juice and sprinkle some cumin seed to taste.
