Turkey Reuben

    This hot turkey sandwich is toasted on rye bread with sauerkraut, turkey meat, Swiss cheese and thousand island dressing. Or you can just put it in a toastie maker.

    Serves: 2 

    • 1 cup sauerkraut, drained
    • 300g sliced deli turkey meat
    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 4 slices rye bread
    • 4 slices Swiss cheese
    • 4 tablespoons thousand island salad dressing, or to taste

    1. Warm the sauerkraut and turkey separately in a microwave-safe bowls for 30-seconds; set aside. Spread butter generously on one side of each slice of rye bread then spread the thousand island dressing on the other side. Divide the sauerkraut, turkey and Swiss cheese on two slice of bread with the butter-side down. Stack the remaining two slices of bread with the butter-side up on top.
    2. Heat a large griddle pan over medium-low heat. Arrange the sandwiches on the griddle and cook until lightly browned and the cheese is melted, about 3 minutes on each side.


    To save time, you can also cook this sammy in a toasted sandwich maker if you like.

    I am the writer of this recipe, and am so glad that others have enjoyed this as much as my family has. I will agree with other reviewers, that it is perfectly great to use a homemade thousand island dressing, if you don't have any storebought. I usually use a family recipe, which is very similar to Thousand Island Dressing II, but also adds a little grated onion. If you don't use all of the ingredients, feel free to freeze everything except the dressing for later use. If well packaged, the bread, sauerkraut, turkey, and cheese will all freeze perfectly for a second meal...then you just need the dressing! **On a side note, I kindly ask that if you are going to rate my recipe less than 5 stars, that you rate it based on following the recipe, not on crazy substitutions, or whether you think it is accurately named. ; ) This is my only frustration with AR!  -  29 Mar 2011  (Review from Allrecipes USA and Canada)


    I LOVE Reuben sandwiches and this was so good! I used reduced fat Swiss cheese and "Thousand Island Dressing" by Darlis Wilfer from this site. These were quick and easy and tasted great!     I've always made these on the lighter side by using fat free Thousand, one slice of swiss cheese per sandwich, and butter spray. It's a great, healthy alternative to the traditional Reuben!
