healthier sausage rolls

    healthier option on a old favourite great for party food and getting the kids cooking, can be frozen once chilled, not suitable to cook in a microwave oven

    Makes: 24 

    • 500g heart smart beef mince
    • 500g extra lean beef sausages (inside only)
    • 1 onion finely chopped
    • 1 clove garlic crushed
    • 1/2 teaspoon mixed dried herbs
    • 1 tablespoon barbecue sauce
    • 3 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
    • 1/2 cup fresh breadcrumbs (use stale bread)
    • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (or dried)
    • 2 eggs
    • 3 puff pastry sheets (defrosted)
    • salt and pepper to taste

    1. preheat oven to moderate temperature 180c
    2. in a bowl combine sausage meat(slit sausage lengthwise with a sharp knife to remove skin),beef mince, chopped onion, 1 egg, garlic, sauces, parsley, mixed herbs, breadcrumbs and salt and pepper. Mix well to combine.
    3. beat the remaining egg in a bowl. take one defrosted puff pastry sheet and cut in half, brush each edge with egg, and place a portion of the sausage mix down the centre of the pastry strip (just place enough mixture so that you can roll the pastry over and seal the edges) leave the ends open. Take a sharp knife and cut the sausage roll in half then half again, brush with beaten egg and place on a baking tray seam side down, repeat with remaining pastry and meat mixture.
    4. place sausage rolls seam side down on a baking tray,(allow a little space between them) and brush with beaten egg
    5. bake for around 30 mins or until golden brown, serve with your favourite sauce or relish

    Freezing tip

    cool in fridge and freeze in sealed containers
