Coffee Barbecue Sauce

    45 minutes

The coffee helps to give the sauce a unique flavour which works particularly well on beef, but you just might find yourself putting this sauce on most anything.

    Serves: 10

    • 2 cups chopped onions
    • 1 cup strong black coffee
    • 1 cup tomato sauce
    • 1 cup Worcestershire sauce
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar
    • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
    • 1/4 cup hot chillies, minced
    • 3 tablespoons chilli powder
    • 6 cloves garlic, minced
    • 2 teaspoons salt

    Preparation:15min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Ready in:45min

    1. Mix together the onions, coffee, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, cider vinegar, hot chillies, chilli powder, garlic and salt in a saucepan until the brown sugar has dissolved. Place over medium heat, bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
    2. Pour the sauce into a blender, filling the pitcher no more than halfway full. Hold down the lid of the blender with a folded kitchen towel and carefully start the blender, using a few quick pulses to get the sauce moving before leaving it on to puree. Puree in batches until smooth. Store in glass container in refrigerator.

Great sauce. I plan to tweak it a bit, but this is a really good start. It's not too sweet, not too vinegary, not too ketchupy, not too mustardy.  -  08 Apr 2011  (Review from Allrecipes USA and Canada)

Great sauce. Used it on chicken wings in the crockpot. Yum. Plan to keep some in the frig. for later.  -  17 May 2011  (Review from Allrecipes USA and Canada)

This was great on ribs. I cooked the ribs for an hour in a rice cooker with 3/4 cup of this sauce, 1/2 cup broth, and 6 ounces beer. The only change I made was to add a few drops of Sriracha hot sauce when it was simmering.  -  31 Jul 2010  (Review from Allrecipes USA and Canada)
