Simple Seared Tuna Steaks

    This is an elegant and simple way to prepare tuna steaks whether it's ahi or another species. As good as you'll get in a restaurant.

    Ingredients
    Serves: 2 

    • 2 (140g) ahi tuna steaks
    • 1 teaspoon sea salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    • 1/2 tablespoon butter
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1 teaspoon whole peppercorns

    Directions
    Preparation:5min  ›  Cook:12min  ›  Ready in:17min 

    1. Season the tuna steaks with salt and cayenne pepper.
    2. Melt the butter with the olive oil in a frypan over medium-high heat. Cook the peppercorns in the mixture until they soften and pop, about 5 minutes. Gently place the seasoned tuna in the frypan and cook to desired doneness, 1 1/2 minutes per side for rare.

    This was very easy and tasty, however the entire house filled with smoke and I literally had to open all the windows and have my husband take our baby outside. Now I'm no cook, but I thought this was odd because I followed the directions exactly as they were written. Next time I will cook at a lower heat and forget about trying to pop the peppercorns, because this was when the oil began to burn and fill the house with smoke (and they never popped anyway).  -  01 Nov 2008  (Review from Allrecipes USA and Canada)

    This is very good but there is too much salt in the recipe. I made this for 4 and the recipe called for 2 tsp kosher salt. I only used 1 tsp and it was still salty. But other than that, everyone loved it. Will definitely make again. Just with less salt. I also used yellow tail tuna steaks.  -  10 Mar 2008  (Review from Allrecipes USA and Canada)
