    Serves: 4

    • 1 tablespoon butter or oil
    • 2 small onions, diced
    • 250g mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
    • 500g beef mince
    • 1 tablespoon vegemite
    • 1 teaspoon paprika
    • 2 beef stock cubes
    • 2 tablespoons gravy powder
    • 1 cup (250ml) water, or as needed

    Preparation:10min  ›  Cook:25min  ›  Extra time:5min  ›  Ready in:40min

    1. Melt the butter in a wok or frypan over medium heat. Add the onions and mushrooms and fry until soft.
    2. Stir in the mince; cook until evenly browned.
    3. Push all of the beef and onion out to the sides, leaving a pool of butter in the centre. Stir the vegemite into the butter, and mix until well blended, then mix with mince and onions and mushrooms.
    4. Stir in the paprika, and stock cubes. The mixture will start to become sticky and bind together.
    5. Add the water and gravy powder. It will be sticky at first. Just stir and bring to a simmer, cook for a further five minutes then it's ready to serve.

I can't wait to try this. Did anyone else notice that 'sommerset' used tomato sauce (which is incredibly high in salt) to even out the flavour, which was way too salty? Hmmmm....  -  07 Jun 2013

Used different ingredients. Mum used to make this all the time when I was a kid. I follow this recipe but add peas like she used to, and I also omit the paprika. Husband can't stand Marmite, but I love it. The gravy is delicious, and goes great with carrots and mashed potatoes. This is wonderful comfort food; quick, easy and inexpensive too. Thanks!  -  29 Sep 2008
