French Christmas Biscuits

    8 hours 16 minutes

You will need a pizzelle iron to make these traditional French Christmas biscuits. The dough needs to chill overnight but after that they are a snap to make.

    23 people made this

    Serves: 144

    • 900g dark brown sugar
    • 450g butter
    • 7 eggs
    • 1 tablespoon vanilla essence
    • 6 1/2 cups (810g) plain flour

    Preparation:15min  ›  Cook:1min  ›  Extra time:8hours chilling  ›  Ready in:8hours16min

    1. In a large bowl, stir together the brown sugar and butter until smooth and creamy. Add eggs and vanilla and beat well. Gradually stir in flour. Set bowl over a hot water bath and stir to blend ingredients. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
    2. Preheat the pizzelle iron.
    3. Shape dough into 3cm balls and place in the pizzelle iron. Close the iron and cook the biscuits. This should take about 30 seconds for an electric iron, or 2 to 4 minutes in a handheld iron over a medium flame. Carefully remove biscuits and cool on wire racks.
