This is a classic style sheet chocolate cake. The cake is made from scratch including the use of brown sugar and condensed milk. Once cooked it is covered in a rich chocolate icing that contains walnuts.


Serves: 24 

  • 250g margarine
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup (250ml) water
  • 2 cups (250g) plain flour
  • 1 1/2 cups (250g) brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon bicarb soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup (85ml) sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • Icing
  • 60g margarine
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup (185ml) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup (155g) icing sugar
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Grease a 25x38cm Swiss roll cake tin.
  2. In small saucepan melt margarine then stir in cocoa and water. Bring to a boil then remove from heat.
  3. In a large bowl combine flour, brown sugar, bicarb soda, cinnamon and salt. Beat in cocoa mixture.
  4. Stir in sweetened condensed milk, eggs and vanilla. Pour into prepared cake tin.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly touched.
  6. Icing: In a small saucepan melt the butter then stir in the cocoa and sweetened condensed milk. Stir in icing sugar and nuts. Spread on warm cake.
