Stir Fried Tofu and Pork

    This is a quick and simple Chinese stir fry that combines firm tofu with pork mince in a black bean flavoured sauce.

    Ingredients
    Serves: 4 

    • 1 teaspoon cornflour
    • 1 tablespoon water
    • 250g pork mince
    • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
    • 1 tablespoon crushed garlic
    • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
    • 500g firm tofu, cut into 2cm pieces
    • 5 tablespoons soy sauce
    • 2 tablespoons black bean sauce
    • 1 teaspoon white sugar
    • 3 spring onions, sliced
    • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

    Directions

    1. Mix cornflour and water in a small bowl.
    2. Brown pork mince in a small frypan over medium high heat; about 5 minutes. Drain fat.
    3. Heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat in a large frypan. Cook the garlic and ginger in the oil until fragrant; about 1 minute.
    4. Stir in tofu and cook for 2 minutes.
    5. Season with the soy sauce, black bean sauce and sugar; stir to combine.
    6. Stir in the cooked pork and spring onion. Sprinkle with the cornflour and water mixture then cook and stir until thickened; about 2 minutes.
    7. Stir the sesame oil into the thickened sauce.

    My daughters are vegetarian, so I left out the meat, and I was winging it at suppertime (late!), so I didn't have everything. In my version I used olive oil, no meat.. didn't know what hot bean sauce so I put in some white miso (1 tbsp) instead. My daughter--who doesn't like sesame seeds, and I did use the roasted sesame oil--thinks this dish is keeper. So do I  -  23 Oct 2011  (Review from Allrecipes USA and Canada)

    This recipe is delicious. I didn't have any hot bean sauce so I substituted a mixture of miso paste and chili garlic sauce. I also substituted onion chives for the green onion.
