Beer Battered Cod

This is a basic beer batter and is ideal for any white fleshed fish. Serve with homemade baked potato chips and coleslaw.

Serves: 6 

  • 4 cups (500g) plain flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarb soda
  • 2 tablespoons cornflour
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups (375ml) milk
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) beer
  • salt to taste
  • ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 650g cod fillets
  • 8 cups (2 litres) vegetable oil for frying

  1. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, bicarb soda and cornflour.
  2. In a large bowl, beat together eggs and milk. Mix in beer. Stir in flour mixture. Season with salt, black pepper and garlic powder.
  3. In an electric deep fryer or a heavy saucepan, heat oil to 190 degrees C.
  4. Coat fish in batter and submerge in hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 4 to 5 minutes. Serve.
