These are a great for a kid's Halloween party! Chocolate cake mix is an easy option when you are making so many. Use liquorice for the legs and jelly beans or smarties for the eyes.

    Serves: 24

    • 1 packet (500g) chocolate cake mix
    • 500g black liquorice strips
    • 500g prepared icing
    • mini jelly beans, smarties, snakes, fruit bats, cut up false teeth for decoration

    Preparation:1hour  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Ready in:1hour30min

    1. Prepare cupcakes according to packet directions. Let cool completely.
    2. Cut liquorice laces into 8cm sections. Working with one or two cupcakes at a time, so the icing doesn't set before decorating, ice the cupcakes with the white icing. Insert liquorice pieces into the outer edges of the cupcakes to make the legs of the spider, 3 legs on each side (4 take up too much space). Make eyes and fangs out of the other lollies in the scariest way possible. Repeat with remaining cupcakes.

Feel free to play around with the cupcake decorations - you can use any colour icing, use Smarties for the eyes, or snakes for the legs. Just try to make them look as scary as you can.

These are pretty cute to make. I suggest inserting the liquorice laced into the cakes before icing them...it made it so much easier this way. Recommended for Halloween parties for sure!! I hope the kids enjoy these at my son's school party!!! Thanks for posting this Heatherly!  -  29 Sep 2008

Very cute idea. I also could not find black laces. The red kind worked well and matched the eyes. I liked that much better.  -  29 Sep 2008

This was a lot of fun to make and my adult friends loved it. We used red liquorice instead, no one liked the black.  -  29 Sep 2008
