In a large shallow dish mix together the shrimp paste, fish sauce, black soy sauce and sugar. Add the spare ribs, stir to coat and allow to marinate for 20 minutes.
In another bowl, mix together the cornflour, oil and water. Stir in with the spare ribs, let marinate for 5-7 minutes more.
Steam the spare ribs for 15 minutes over high heat. Serve.
