Stir Fried Beef in Red Wine Sauce

This is a simple dish to make and tastes delicious. Beef is very comforting cooked with mushrooms in a red wine sauce. Serve with potatoes, pasta or rice.


Serves: 2 

  • 350g fillet of beef, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon light soy sauce or 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornflour, mixed with 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 tablespoons oil, divided
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 300g sliced mushrooms
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Sauce
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) red wine
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon caster sugar
  • fresh basil for garnish (optional)

  1. Marinate the beef in sugar, soy sauce and cornflour slurry for 20 minutes.
  2. Heat a large frying pan with 1 tablespoon oil over high heat. Fry the beef until nearly done, about 2-3 minutes, drain and set aside.
  3. Heat the same frying pan with 1 tablespoon oil over high heat. Stir fry the garlic until fragrant, 2-3 minutes. Add the onion and salt; cook until soft, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the mushrooms and black pepper.
  4. Add the red wine, water, tomato sauce and sugar. Stir to mix and bring to the boil. Add the beef back into the pan and mix well. Garnish with basil, if desired.
