These are wonderful small rolls that do not use yeast so are quick and easy to make. They are ideal to have with any meal or as a snack.

Serves: 6

  • 2 1/4 cups (280g) flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarb soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 240ml buttermilk
  • 1 pinch sugar, for sprinkling

Preparation:5min  ›  Cook:20min  ›  Ready in:25min

  1. Preheat oven to 230 degrees C.
  2. Mix the flour, baking powder and bicarb together.
  3. Combine the oil and buttermilk then mix into the flour mixture. Mix with a wooden spoon so that an even and moist dough is formed. Don't mix for too long.
  4. With two teaspoons make 12 equal piles on a greased baking tray, spaced generously apart. Flatten the tops out a little but not too much; the bread rolls should look quite irregular! Sprinkle with a little sugar (demerara looks nice).
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until they are golden brown. Serve immediately.
