This is a great birthday cake that is easy to make and decorate. The butterfly wings are the two halves of a round cake and then the decorations are up to you.


Serves: 1 

  • Cake
  • 150g butter
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 2 eggs
  • 100ml milk
  • 200g plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 200g milk chocolate, grated
  • Decoration
  • 1 large waffle or 2 sponge fingers
  • chocolate icing
  • 2 liquorice strings
  • Smarties or M&Ms
  • hundreds and thousands
  • other sweets as desired
  • chocolate chips

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
  2. Cake: Beat the butter with hand mixer until very creamy. Gradually stir in the sugar and vanilla and mix well. Mix in the eggs one by one, stirring well after each egg. Then stir in the milk.
  3. Mix flour, baking powder and cocoa then sieve and fold in. Fold in the chocolate.
  4. Spoon mixture into the prepared springform tin and bake in the preheated oven for about 75-90 minutes. Use a skewer to test if the cake is baked in the middle.
  5. Allow the cake to cool for a short while then remove it from the springform tin and allow it to cool completely.
  6. Decoration: Cut the cake in half and place a small distance apart with the round sides facing each other.
  7. Cover with the chocolate icing and decorate with smarties and other bright sweets.
  8. Lay a waffle or 2 sponge fingers in the middle as the body and place 2 liquorice strings as the feelers.
