    12 minutes

Quick and delicious if unusual dessert that will be a hit; probably more suited to adults than children. Lightly fried bananas topped with maple syrup and black pepper.

    Serves: 2

    • 2 bananas
    • 2 Tbsp maple syrup (or 1Tbsp of honey)
    • 1 tsp whole black pepper
    • cream, to serve (optional)

    1. Slice bananas into 1.5cm thick slices, fry at moderate heat turning once until soft (about 5 minutes). Then add maple syrup or honey to coat the banana slices.
    2. Meanwhile crush the pepper very coarsely in mortar and pestle.
    3. Serve bananas on a plate on it a bowl, sprinkle with crushed pepper and a dollop of cream if desired.

Coarse black pepper isn't as hot as its finely ground counterpart and provides a great contrast to the sweetness of the bananas. Cream or even sour cream or yogurt can be used to make the dessert more delicate.

Works just as well with strawberries.
