Meatballs in a Chilli Tomato Sauce

    You can also cook this spicy meatball dish in the slow cooker 6 to 8 hours on low after you've fried the meatballs. Serve with pasta or rice.

    Serves: 4 

    • 500g beef mince
    • 200g sausage mince
    • 3/4 cup (90g) breadcrumbs
    • 1 egg
    • 1 onion, finely chopped
    • 1 green capsicum, finely chopped
    • 5 cloves garlic, crushed (divided)
    • salt & pepper
    • olive oil for frying
    • 2 cans (each 400g) chopped tomatoes
    • handful of fresh basil, chopped (divided)
    • 1 tsp chilli powder
    • small glass red wine
    • pasta or rice to serve

    1. In a blender/food processor add tomatoes, 1/2 the basil, salt and pepper to taste and blend.
    2. In a clean bowl mix together both the minces, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, capsicum, the second half of the basil, 2 of the garlic cloves, salt and pepper.
    3. Once evenly mixed take a heap of mixture on a tablespoon and roll into a ball; continue this with the rest of mixture.
    4. Heat olive oil in shallow pan add the meatballs and brown. Once browned place in ovenproof dish with lid.
    5. Pour blended tomato mixture over the meatballs and add the rest of basil, the rest of the garlic, chilli powder and red wine.
    6. Place in oven at 180 degrees C for 1 hour and 30 mins.
