    Bread sauce is a classic British white sauce served with the roast dinner at Christmas. It keeps in the fridge for about three days and is also great in sandwiches!

    Serves: 8 

    • 1 onion, peeled but kept whole
    • 4 whole cloves
    • 200ml milk
    • 2 bay leaves
    • fresh white breadcrumbss
    • salt and crushed black pepper, to taste
    • 50g butter

    1. Stud the peeled onion with the whole cloves and poach gently in the milk with bay leaves until soft, about 15 minutes. Remove and discard bay leaves.
    2. In a blender, puree the onion, milk and cloves together until smooth. Now, working in small batches, add breadcrumbs and blend until the sauce is as thick as you like.
    3. Season with salt and pepper to taste and stir in butter. Serve warm.
