This Chinese dish has found itself very much at home in Australian kitchens, popular with adults and children alike.

Herbie's Spices New South Wales, Australia

Serves: 4 

  • 40ml dark soy sauce
  • 40ml Chinese rice wine
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon Herbie's Spices Chinese Five Spice
  • 20ml peanut or canola oil
  • 250g lean pork mince
  • 250g minced chicken
  • 2 teaspoons each ginger and garlic, minced
  • dried shitake mushrooms, soaked in 1/2 cup hot water
  • 3 shallots, sliced finely on diagonal
  • 150g water chestnuts, chopped
  • 150g bamboo shoots, finely chopped
  • 30ml water from soaked mushrooms
  • 8 iceberg lettuce 'cups', washed and drained
  • 2 teaspoons Herbie's Spices Toasted Sesame Seeds

Preparation:20min  ›  Cook:15min  ›  Ready in:35min 

  1. Combine soy, rice wine, sesame oil and five spice in a bowl.
  2. Heat canola oil in wok, add the mince and brown well.
  3. Add ginger, garlic and vegetables and stir fry 2-3 minutes, adding mushroom liquid if catching.
  4. Add soy mixture and stir until heated through.
  5. Spoon into lettuce cups, 2 per person, and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Additional Tips

The spices are all-important in achieving the true flavour of this dish. A great way to get the kids to help in the kitchen!
