This cake is almost like a pudding and makes a great dessert when served warm. Goes well with some fresh cream or vanilla ice cream.


Serves: 10 

  • Cake
  • 2 large apples
  • 1 cup (220g) white sugar
  • 65g butter or margarine
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup (125g) plain flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon bicarb soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Sauce
  • 125g butter or margarine
  • 1 cup (220g) white sugar
  • 1/2 cup thickened cream
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla essence

  1. Cake: Preheat an oven to 180 degrees C. Ready a 23cm glass pie dish.
  2. Peel, core and grate the apples.
  3. Cream together the sugar and butter. Stir in the grated apples and eggs. Sift together flour, salt, bicarb soda, nutmeg and cinnamon. Mix into the apple mixture.
  4. Pour the batter into the pie dish. Bake into the preheated oven for 50 minutes.
  5. Sauce: Place the butter, sugar, cream and vanilla in the top of a double boiler. Heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved and butter has melted. Serve over apple cake.
