Bread Machine Hot Cross Buns

    I adapted this for a bread machine from an old recipe. We always have these at Easter.

    Serves: 15 

    • 90ml milk
    • 90ml water
    • 1 egg
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 5 tablespoons (60g) caster sugar
    • 4 tablespoons (80g) butter or margarine
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • 1/2 teaspoon finely grated orange rind
    • 400g bread flour
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried active yeast
    • 80g sultanas
    • 75g flour
    • 1/2 cup water

    1. Place milk, 90ml water, egg, salt, white sugar, butter or margarine, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange rind, bread flour, yeast and sultanas into the pan of the bread machine. Select the Dough setting, and press Start.
    2. When the cycle is finished form the dough into 15 buns and place on a greased 23x33cm tray. Let rise for one hour.
    3. Preheat oven to 190 degrees C. Mix the flour and water together and pipe crosses onto the buns. Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Cool.

    Altered ingredient amounts. These look and smell yummy but they are abit tasteless and I would next time be putting in more spices to add flavor  -  23 Mar 2010


    I live in China where you cannot buy HCB's so I made these 3 times and they didn't last long. These were really easy, mixing the dough in the bread maker, then cooking in the oven. For the crosses I used 1/3 cup icing sugar with 2 tsp milk and a drop of vanilla.  -  11 Apr 2012
